Relief, for some, as travellers move on
 |
| SOLID AS A ROCK: Boulders are being placed on the East Overcliff near where travellers parked their caravans a couple of weeks ago |
REDHILL residents heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday after travellers moved off Redhill Common, just days before they were due to be evicted.
But their sentiments were not shared by King's Park householders when the unwanted guests turned up on their doorstep.
Bournemouth council confirmed that some of the same travellers who gained access to Redhill Common last Sunday afternoon had journeyed just a few miles before setting up temporary home at King's Park.
A spokesman said: "Six vehicles seen at Redhill have turned up at King's Park. They were due to be served an eviction notice on Friday. If they hadn't moved on the bailiffs would have moved in on Monday.
"We are assessing the situation. If they choose to stay we will have to go through the same court proceedings as before.
"They are not the same travellers who were previously at King's Park, otherwise the same eviction notice would have applied."
Cllr Anne Rey said: "This problem has to be tackled otherwise the travellers will just keep moving from one public open space to another.
"I sympathise with King's Park residents who have paid their council tax; it is extremely frustrating because of all the resources involved.
"Hopefully between Bournemouth and Poole local authorities we will be able to find an authorised site."
In the meantime travellers have moved on from a village green, amid claims that they have left a sickening trail of human waste in their wake.
Caravans which arrived at Horton Road green in St Leonard's a
fortnight ago, after leaving Avon Heath Country Park, left on Tuesday afternoon.
Parish council chairman Jenny House told the Daily Echo yesterday: "We gave them plastic bags to put their rubbish in.
"However, they have left human waste around the field and on the footpath. It's very unpleasant."
A contractor will be brought in to clean and sanitise the green.
The council has erected temporary obstructions on the green.
Measures to deter travellers have also been taken at Bournemouth's East Overcliff where boulders have been placed to restrict access after travellers arrived there last month.
