Council too broke to pay new scheme

A new scheme of members' allowances for the Borough of Poole has been deferred - because the council cannot afford it.

An Independent Remuneration Panel came up with a scheme of payments for councillors that would cost £610,300 resulting in a budget deficit of £39,030 if all allowances were claimed.

"With every service having to make cuts, it's unreasonable that we should be asking for an increase," said Cllr Mrs Ann Stribley, leader of the Conservative group.

At the annual council meeting she proposed an amendment which accepted the recommendations in principle but will not implement them until a review is undertaken.

In the meantime the basic allowance will be £8,980 and reductions made in some of the special responsibility allowances, in a bid to keep within the budget for 2008/9 of £571,470.

And at present another cabinet portfolio holder has not been appointed to replace Cllr Mrs Mary Hillman, who died at Easter.

Cllr Brian Clements, Liberal Democrat, said they supported it in principle but put forward an amendment stating the budget for members' allowances should not be exceeded.

"They may come back in a few months' time and say we have now found the money from somewhere else within the council's budget," he said.

He also objected to the amendment that the group leader's special responsibility allowance should not go to any group with fewer than four members, but these were both voted down and the Liberal Democrats abstained.

"We are not proposing to go over budget without looking at all the options," said Cllr Mrs Stribley.

A cross-party working group will be set up to look into the matter.

Quite, hurrah for some common sense !

When we start having insufficient people standing for election it will be the right time to re-examine allowances.

Glad to see common sense prevail.
Only wish Bournemouth Council thought the same way.

Now that the main option,i.e. delaying payment of these increases until after the Branksome by election has been achieved, how many months before Poole Conservative Councillors give themselves an extra hand out. Hands up for those who think it will be less than 6 months!

Perhaps Councillors should take a cut in their allowances then.

Woodley - you seem to have nothing to do but to comment on everything - why don't you put yourself up for election?
You won't win any votes from people who read your comments, but all least you would have put your money where your mouth is!

You have a reputaion of having comments removed so lets see on this one.

Enigma - does the Council actually want a Victor Meldrew serving on it? Well done Poole on a sensible and measured decision.

I think Victor Meldrew would be in good company on Poole Council and in the offices too!! He would certainly be on Leveretts back - someone needs to be!! We need more hard workers like Sandra Moore!!

You poor fool,i am nearly 74 with two lots of cancer and 2 blocked heart valves, and as you are so ignorant as to call people by their surname,a sign of very common upbringing, without giving your name, you are obviously one of those nasty creeps i have been fighting against for years, probably a mason,it is obvious the truth has got through to you,i have done a share as a councillor and at my last meeting i was accorded tributes from fellow councillors from all parties. As Rose,a typical tory mouthpiece, has come alive again, i am pleased as it shows the type of persons who love to have a go at me,and gets me more support from the genuine public who i meet all over the town,The echo removes offensive, and very personal comments, and as a certain section of the so called "establishment" are determined to mount a vicious and very nasty campaign against me,i am very grateful to the ECHO for preserving my right to speak,Anonymous cowards will only get support from their like.
